Ngorongoro Conservation Area Rules & Visitor Guidelines

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the second most visited protected area in Tanzania after Serengeti National Park. The area is home to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Ngorongoro Crater, which is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of its importance, clear rules and regulations are in place to protect wildlife and the environment.

Ngorongoro rules and regulations are meant to preserve the ecosystem and keep visitors safe. Every person visiting the conservation area and the crater is expected to follow these rules at all times.

  • Driving inside the park is only allowed between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. The only exception is for permitted guided night game drives. Outside these hours, vehicles must be at lodges or camps.
  • Animals always have the right of way. Drivers must stop and allow animals to pass freely without pressure.
  • The speed limit in the park is 50 kilometers per hour. During game drives, the recommended speed is 25 kilometers per hour to reduce noise and dust and to allow safe wildlife viewing.
  • Off track driving is strictly not allowed. All safari vehicles must remain on marked roads and tracks to prevent damage to the land.
  • Visitors should not get too close to animals. Keeping a safe distance helps avoid stress to wildlife and reduces the risk of danger.
  • Hooting is not allowed. Clapping, revving engines, playing loud music, or throwing objects to attract animals is also forbidden. Silence is the best way to observe wildlife.
  • Pets and weapons are not allowed inside the conservation area.
  • Littering is not allowed. All rubbish must be kept inside the vehicle and disposed of properly at lodges or designated areas.
  • Picnics are only allowed at approved picnic sites within the crater.
  • Campfires must be put out fully to prevent fire outbreaks, especially during the dry season.
  • Feeding animals is not allowed. Wild animals must find their own food naturally.
  • Any form of destruction is forbidden. This includes breaking plants, uprooting trees, moving rocks, or touching eggs or bones.
  • Drones are not allowed in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

By following these rules, visitors help protect wildlife, support conservation efforts, and ensure Ngorongoro remains safe for future generations.
