Explore the Ancient Amboni Caves in Tanga, Tanzania

The Amboni Caves are very famous and are located in East Africa. The caves are specifically within 8 Kilometers north of the Tanga areas in Tanzania. This is on the Tanga-Mombasa high way. The caves are believed to be about 150 million years old. They were probably formed in the Jurassic age. The Amboni caves are covering an area of about 234 square Kilometers. The area is believed to have been submerged in water about 20 million years ago according to research. They are about 10 caves in total for tourists to explore.

Discovery of the Amboni Caves

A company in the Amboni area that was in charge of collecting sisal from the plantations in the area informed the British colonial government about the caves in the year 1892. After studies and research, the areas were declared a conservation area in 1922.

The specific time that these caves were discovered is not known but it is believed that there are local people here were praying from the caves. The local groups included Sambaa, Digo, Bondei and the Segeju. These groups of people live near these caves. The caves were assigned to the Tanzania department of Antiquities in the years 1963.

Formation of the Caves.

It is believed that the Amboni Caves were generally formed as a result of erosion. There are three theories to their formations. One is that Carbon Oxide was absorbed into the rain water that turned into a weak carbon acid. This acid had the ability to dissolve calcium carbonate. After this dissolution, the solution formed limestone. The rainwater then slipped through the limestone to form cavities that later became caves.

Location of Amboni Caves

The Caves are basically about 8 kilometers on the Tanga-Mombasa highway. When you leave Tanga, take the left turn and head to Mjessani. Drive for about 5.5 kilometers and take a foot pathfor about 2 kilometes.
