Detailed Safari Itinerary

Northern Highland Forest Reserve of Ngorongoro

Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

You will be picked up from the airport or your hotel in Arusha and driven to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes you through the countryside of northern Tanzania, with views of local villages, farmlands, and open landscapes. Along the way, you may start to see wildlife as you enter the conservation area.

On arrival at your lodge or camp, you will check in and enjoy lunch. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and adjust to the surroundings. You can enjoy views from the lodge, listen to nature sounds, and prepare for the activities ahead. Dinner and overnight will be at your accommodation.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the crater rim and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a full game drive. This area has a high number of animals living close together because of the permanent water and grass. You have a good chance of seeing the African Big Five, including lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and the endangered black rhino.

Other animals commonly seen include hippos, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, jackals, hyenas, and cheetahs. Birdlife is also rich, with flamingos, storks, and other water birds near the lakes and swamps. After the game drive, you will ascend back to the crater rim and return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will visit a nearby Maasai village. You will learn about their daily life, traditions, and how they live alongside wildlife. You may take part in traditional dances and see local crafts. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge.

Day 3: Guided walking safari in Ngorongoro

After breakfast, you will head out for a guided walking safari with an armed ranger. Walking allows you to experience the area at a slower pace and notice details not seen from a vehicle. You may learn about animal tracks, plants, insects, and small wildlife such as dung beetles and birds.

After the walk, you will return to the vehicle and continue with a game drive around the crater rim and nearby areas. You will stop at a designated picnic site for lunch. Later in the day, you will return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Return to Arusha

After breakfast, you will check out and drive back to Arusha. On the way, you may make an optional stop at the Oldupai Gorge Museum, where you can learn about early human history. You will then continue to Arusha for drop off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of the Ngorongoro Wildlife and Hiking Safari.
