Lake Natron Tanzania Travel Guide

Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline and hyper saline lakes in Tanzania. While Tanzania has several alkaline lakes, Lake Natron is the most well known and widely talked about. The lake is famous because of its extreme conditions, which make it one of the harshest natural environments in the country.

Lake Natron is very shallow, with an average depth of about three meters, and it stretches for about 22 kilometers in width. The main source of water for the lake is the Ewaso Ng’iro River, which flows from Kenya into Tanzania. At certain times, lava materials rich in potassium carbonates flow into the lake from the nearby Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. These materials increase the lake’s alkalinity and salt levels.

The lake has no outlet, meaning water does not flow out of it. Instead, it depends on rainfall and river inflow to survive. Despite very high evaporation caused by intense heat, Lake Natron has continued to exist for many years. This balance between inflow and evaporation keeps the lake alive, even under extreme weather conditions.

Only a few fish and bird species have tried to live in Lake Natron. For many animals, the lake can be deadly due to the high salt and alkaline levels. However, some species have managed to survive by staying in the cooler parts of the lake. Birds, especially flamingos, are well adapted to these conditions. Their skin and legs are built to handle the hot and salty water, which protects them from burns.

Lake Natron does not support human life and is known more for death than life. In ancient times, people used the lake to preserve dead bodies because of its strong chemical makeup. Bodies placed in the lake could be preserved for long periods.

Today, Lake Natron faces serious threats. There are plans to build a dam on the Ewaso Ng’iro River, which is the lake’s main water source. There is also a soda ash plant near the lake, which threatens flamingos and affects salinity levels.

There have been accidents at the lake, including a helicopter crash involving photographers. Survivors were rescued with eye and skin burns. They survived mainly because the lake is shallow.
