Empakaai Crater – Quiet Walking Safari & Crater Lake Views

The Empakaai Crater is one of the lesser visited sites in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, but it is worth a visit for travelers who want a quiet and scenic experience. Although it is not as well known as the Ngorongoro Crater, Empakaai offers a calm setting and wide views.

Empakaai Crater has a diameter of about eight kilometers. A large lake fills most of the crater floor. The lake covers nearly the entire base of the crater and is about 300 meters deep. The crater walls are steep, which makes the lake feel enclosed and protected. Because of this shape, the area remains peaceful and less crowded.

The lake inside Empakaai Crater sits at a high altitude. On the western side, the elevation is about 3,200 meters above sea level. On the eastern side, it is about 2,590 meters above sea level. The difference in height creates clear viewpoints around the rim. The water in the lake appears blue and reflects the sky, especially on clear days.

From the rim of Empakaai Crater, visitors can see Ol Doinyo Lengai in the distance. This mountain is important to the Maasai people and is known as the Mountain of God. On very clear days, it is also possible to see parts of Lake Natron, which lies further north in the Rift Valley.

Empakaai Crater is best explored on foot with a guide. Walking along the rim allows visitors to enjoy views of the lake, forested slopes, and surrounding highlands. Birdlife is common, especially around the lake, where flamingos and other water birds are sometimes seen.

There is a campsite located on the rim of Empakaai Crater. Visitors who wish to stay overnight should arrange this in advance through a tour operator. Camping here allows more time to explore the area. For those not staying overnight, a picnic lunch can also be arranged at the crater.

A visit to Empakaai Crater adds variety to a Ngorongoro safari. It combines walking, highland views, and a quiet atmosphere within northern Tanzania.
