Dung Beetles of Ngorongoro & Their Role in the Ecosystem

The dung beetle in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area plays a very important role in the natural ecosystem. These small insects act as a natural bush sanitation system. By removing animal waste from the ground, dung beetles help keep grazing areas clean and healthy for wildlife.

Dung beetles are very strong insects. Even though they are small, they can move dung that is more than ten times their own weight. This strength allows them to break down and remove large amounts of animal waste in a short time. Because Ngorongoro has many large animals such as elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeests, dung beetles are always active in the area.

A dung beetle is usually about two centimeters long. Despite their small size, they use smart techniques to move dung. One of the most common behaviors seen in Ngorongoro is the rolling of dung balls. The beetle shapes dung into a round ball and then rolls it away from the main pile. It uses its back legs to push the dung while standing on its front legs. This movement is easy to spot when watching closely on open plains.

Dung beetles are also known to protect the dung balls they roll. Once a beetle has formed and moved its dung ball, it guards it from other beetles. This dung ball is often used as food or as a place to lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the young beetles feed on the dung, continuing the cycle.

The work done by dung beetles helps the soil in Ngorongoro. By burying dung, they add nutrients back into the ground. This improves soil quality and helps grass grow better. Dung beetles also reduce the number of flies and parasites by removing dung quickly.

Visitors on safari in Ngorongoro may notice dung beetles during game drives or walking activities. While small, they are one of the most important insects in the area.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area can be visited throughout the year. The dry months are from December to February and from mid June to mid September. The wet months are from October to November and from March to mid June. Even during the rainy season, rain does not fall all day, so visits are still possible.
