Loitokitok Border Crossing & Tanzania Visa Guide

Loitokitok Border is one of the most commonly used border crossings for tourists traveling between Kenya and Tanzania. It is mainly used by visitors moving from Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, which is home to the tallest mountain in Africa, to Amboseli National Park. This border is also popular with hikers using the northern routes of Mount Kilimanjaro who choose to enter Tanzania through Kenya.

Even though Loitokitok Border is located in a remote area, all travelers must go through full customs and immigration procedures. Immigration officers check passports, visas, and other entry documents. Travelers may also be required to show vaccination certificates, depending on the current health regulations. It is important to have all documents ready to avoid delays at the border.

Difference Between Visa on Arrival and E Visa

There is still an option for a visa on arrival even after the introduction of the e visa system. However, travelers are advised not to rely on this option unless there is no other choice. Visa on arrival is not available for all nationalities, so it is very important to confirm in advance whether your country qualifies for it.

The e visa is the better option for most travelers because it saves time at the border or airport. Visa fees are usually 50 US dollars or 100 US dollars, depending on the type of visa and the length of stay. Travelers should also carry contact details of their tour operator, as immigration officers may request this information during entry.

How to Apply for a Tanzania Visa Online

To apply for a Tanzania visa online, travelers must visit the official Tanzania Immigration online visa portal and fill in the application form. After completing the form, you will follow the instructions to make payment and submit your application. Once Tanzania Immigration processes your application, you will receive an email confirming your visa status. You can also track your visa application through the same portal.

It is recommended that you apply for your visa early, at least 45 days before your travel date. Processing time can sometimes take more than 60 days, especially for referral visas. Because of this, Tanzania Immigration advises travelers not to book flights before receiving approval for a referral visa.

We have experience assisting travelers to successfully enter Tanzania using referral visas. We also help our clients complete referral visa applications. If you face any difficulties with your visa application, please contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
